Forges of Karak Azgal
Originally the dwarves were mesmerized the by tall – tales of undiscovered wealth within the Grey Mountains. Regrettably the truth behind these tales remains beyond the reach of the dwarves, but many cling to the stubborn hope of a spectacular strike – despite the treacherously unstable rock. Presently only Karak Norn ‘Barren Earth Hold’ rests upon any sizeable deposits of metal ore and semi – precious stones yet found within the Grey Mountains.
Karak Norn is currently ruled by King Brokk Ironpick the Grim and Queen Thurma of the Grintzagaz clan, and is largely inhabited by the refugee clans of Mount Silverspear and the Watchtowers of Mad Dog Pass. Being the largest dwarven hold within the Grey Mountains it wields considerable influence among the surrounding dwarven settlements, but it is the smallest principal dwarfhold outside the World’s Edge Mountains, and Karaz Ankor. Recently the younger dwarves are increasingly dissatisfied with their prospects, and are progressively leaving the Grey Mountains to seek their fortunes elsewhere; as the mood amidst those remaining becomes evermore somber and dour!
The Grey Mountains form a natural border between the humans of The Empire, the Kingdom of Bretonnia and the Wood Elves of Athel Loren. The dwarfhold of Karak Norn is strategically placed, and the upper levels are visible upon a high plateau that distantly overlooks the Wood Elves of Athel Loren. The Grey Mountain Dwarves enjoy a relatively peaceful co – existence with the Bretonnians to the west, and an uneasy truce with the Wood Elves of Athel Loren. They will side with The Empire in times of war with the Bretonnians, and have been known to close all major passes in the southern Grey Mountains, including the well – traveled Montdidier Pass that transverses the southern end of the range, near The Vaults.
